Trends in Spot Cooling
We've all heard Gordon Moore's famous observation - made in 1965 - that integrated circuit transistor density doubles every 24 months. In 1970, CalTech professor Carver Mead termed the observation a "law" because it had held through two and a half chip generations. Somewhere along the way, the prediction's timeframe was changed to 18 months, though Moore adamantly insists that he never said that.

RiLAN Industrial Enclosures Ensure Reliable Networking In Manufacturing Environment

Rittal Corp. has introduced its new RiLAN industrial enclosures, which are designed to house sensitive networking equipment in tough plant floor environments. These enclosures, which can be individually configured to suit specific requirements, are available in carbon steel wallmount and freestanding designs.
Rittal’s RiLAN junction boxes are suitable when impact resistance and NEMA ratings are required for Ethernet applications on the plant floors, in warehouses and other work areas. The larger junction boxes offer space for Ethernet connection of up to 24 subscribers with patch panel and compatibility with all major manufacturers of industrial Ethernet components. The smaller junction boxes provide space for Ethernet connection of up to 24 users without patch panel or space for Ethernet connection of up to 12 users with patch panel.
RiLAN bus enclosures are well suited for smaller applications that require NEMA-rated enclosures. Various models are available with solid and viewing doors, D-rails for component mounting and punchouts for easy cable management. Designed for mounting 19 inch components, RiLAN three-part hinged enclosures allow access to the rear of the installed equipment after the enclosure is attached to the wall. Additional Rittal enclosures with depth adjustable 19 inch rails and easy cable accessibility are available for small networks or corridor distributors.
Offering protection for a large number of components, the freestanding network cabinet provides NEMA Type 12 rated protection and is designed to house networking components in a lockable enclosure. A full line of accessories provides ease in cable management and component installation.
Teko’s Releases Ovotek Designer ABS Enclosures

Two versions are offered with smooth domed top part, or flat top part with recessed area for mounting a membrane keypad, 4.3 inch TFT display or product label. Internal screw bosses are provided in both the top and base for fitting PCBs and keypad assemblies.
The cases can be ordered with or without a battery compartment. Two types of battery compartment are offered which will accept either two 1.5V AA or one 9V cells, or four 1.5 V AA or two 9 V cells. Teko can supply the Ovotek enclosures with additional holes for push-buttons, connectors and controls etc., plus silk-screen printed legends and logos.
EMI Filtered Audio Connectors Meet MIL-DTL-55116
Spectrum Control, Inc. has modified the standard MIL-DTL-55116 connectors that are used in 60 volt audio frequency circuits with 0.5 Amps of current to provide effective EMI filtering. Spectrum’s connectors are waterproof and polarized, five or six pin electrical plugs/receptacles and can be designed for special and selectively loaded EMI filtering. These custom filtered connectors are well suited for military and civilian communication applications where harsh conditions are present.
Spectrum’s custom EMI filtered audio connectors have a capacitance value range of 10pF to 1mF and are available in C and Pi circuit configurations. These custom filtered audio connectors meet all the requirements of MIL-STD-810F including sand and dust, salt, fog, high altitude operation, fungus resistance and immersion to 20 meters.
Jaro Offers Large-Fan Advantages in Compact Water-Resistant
Jaro Thermal has created a new 40 by 28 turbo which provides a breezy 27 CFM of output in a 40 by 28 mm package. Jaro’s fixed blade design produces a static-pressure of 1.85 inches, in water. The new fan boasts an array of important features including IP-55 water and dust protection, on-board PWM speed control, tachometer output, reverse polarity protection and more. The Turbo series is well suited for tightly spaced applications which require ultra-high output.
Gore Protective Vent Maximizes Airflow in Portable Devices
As electronic devices continue to decrease in size, they are also becoming more complex, which means that more heat-generating electronics are being packaged in smaller housings. Therefore, the vents in these housings need to be smaller without sacrificing airflow. In response to this industry trend, W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc. has added a 3 mm high-airflow vent to their line of Gore Protective Vents.
As the smallest vent in Gore’s line of insert-molded vents, the D3 relieves pressure that builds inside the housing. As devices cycle on and off, the electronics and batteries generate potentially harmful heat, which causes the internal pressure to increase and put stress on the housing seals. In addition, sudden weather and environmental changes can cause the internal pressure of an electronic device to drop, resulting in a vacuum of more than 200 millibars (3 psi).
After designing this new high-airflow vent, Gore application engineers ran the D3 Gore protective vent through its proprietary modeling program with interesting results. Using typical specifications for a handheld device, such as a GPS unit, digital camera or MP3 player, Gore investigated the pressure differential if the device is carried between an outdoor temperature of -5°F and an indoor temperature of 75°F.
Gore protective vents provide continuous airflow in sealed housings without allowing contaminants to enter because of the proprietary expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membrane in the vent. This unique ePTFE membrane has a low surface tension, so it repels liquids, such as water, oil and surfactants, as well as preventing dust, dirt and other environmental contaminants from entering the housing.
