Air Flow Data is Key to Heat Control in Enclosures
The demand for miniaturization means that devices must provide greater functionality in higher density and lower profile spaces. Hardware for telecom and internetworking continues to pack more processing power into smaller physical packages, whether at the board or the system level.

Pelican Offers Instant Custom Foam Solution For Their Protector Case Line
For users who need a quick and easy way to protect their valuables in transit, Pelican Products, Inc is now offering a ready-made custom foam solution that sets up in seconds.
“A tough case is only as good as the shock protection inside it and this instant foam delivers a simple and effective shipping and transit protection solution,” said Kevin Deighton, Pelican’s Director of New Product Development.
When liquids inside the packets are mixed, a fully recyclable, shock-absorbent foam barrier is instantly formed to protect virtually any object. Available in five sizes (The largest can cover an area up to 20 by 30-inches) the foam will fit a wide variety of Pelican Protector Case models (From 1300 to 1780). Additionally, the Instapak can work in conjunction with Pelican’s Pick ‘N’ Pluck foam which comes standard in most models.
The Pelican Protector Case sports a trademarked “Dual Band” design and a polymer cell-core wall construction. To ensure easy access, the cases are designed with industrial strength “double throw” latches that can withstand nearly 400 pounds of pressure yet open with a light pull. Additional standard features include a lid equipped with a polymer o-ring for a dust and waterproof seal, and an automatic Gore-TEX pressure equalization valve, that stops moisture from entering and prevents vacuum-lock so the case opens easily at any altitude.
Wi-Fi Enclosures for Extreme Applications
TerraWave offers a new line of enclosures for extreme applications in hazardous locations where critical safety standards apply. These durable enclosures are designed to house Cisco’s 1200 and 1500 series wireless products in potentially hazardous working environments.
The enclosures securely seal or utilize purging systems to protect networking equipment from potentially combustible elements. These enclosures protect the surrounding environment and enable the use of wireless data applications in a number of industries including oil & gas, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, chemical or others with indoor or outdoor processes that require stringent regulatory control of potential flames or sparks.
Aphel Launches 5,000 Watt Dual-Output Voltage PDU
Aphel has launched a new dual-output voltage PDU. Rated at 30 Amps, 208 Volts, this MT3 series Rackmount PDUs supports both new and legacy hardware.
“The launch of these MT3 models represents a significant advancement over the standard market 30 A/208 V PDUs "said Kevin Macomber, vice president of business development.” While customers continue to transition to the utilization of 208 V for computer hardware, there remains a need to support legacy equipment at 120 V. Customers have been obligated to use either three phase power or run two separate circuits to their rackmount enclosure. This new Aphel design eliminates that requirement and more importantly, allows customers to better utilize their pole positions at the panelboard. Coupled with an ammeter that can monitor both outputs and the neutral, this solution is simply unmatched in the marketplace."
MT3 provides total power ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 W as well as optional metering or remote monitoring (RS232) capability. Employing the patent pending rPower, users can read the high-resolution color display from as far as 12 feet or through the enclosure door perforation. Additionally, rPower improves installation flexibility as it can be connected to traditional console port switches. Because of its capability to support so many servers, MT3 greatly simplifies and reduces the cost of rackmount power management.
Heat Sinks Cool BGAs in Low Air Flow Conditions
Advanced Thermal Solutions, Inc. (ATS) has introduced a low profile, high performance heat sink designed for cooling hot BGA components in low airflow velocity conditions. The EX2 heat sink is only 9 mm in height, which allows its use inside enclosures where space is limited. Its case-to-ambient thermal resistance is 1.8°C/W within an air velocity of 600 ft/min.
EX2 heat sinks weight just 16 grams and can be securely attached to a component with double-sided, thermally conductive adhesive tape. With no mechanical hardware needed, weight and assembly time are reduced and valuable board space is conserved.
Prices for EX2 heat sinks start at less than $8.00 each in volume orders.

Lockable Push-to-Close Slide Latch Offers Convenient Installation and Operation with Added Security
A molded thermoplastic body, push-to-close convenience and flexible locking options make the new Southco A3 push-to-close slide latch an attractive and cost-effective solution for secure latching of sheet metal and thin thermoplastic door panels. Its integrated lockplug housing provides added security without sacrificing the small envelope size of the latch and eliminates the need for a separate key cam lock for security.
A one-piece design simplifies latch installation efforts to deliver a low total-installed cost. Both the locking and non-locking versions easily snap into position in identical size rectangular installation holes. Panel thicknesses may range from 8 mm to 16 mm. A molded-in spring-tab holds each latch in place.
The latched door opens with a simple slide of the spring-loaded handle. To re-engage the latch, the user can simply push the door closed. While the door is closed the lock can be engaged to restrict access.
The A3 is part of Southco's "one-lock system" allowing the integrated lock housing to be offered with more than 500 key code options. Keys are ordered in pairs, in a choice of a flat-key or an overmolded key style for a more convenient grip. Molded icons on the lock housing indicate whether the lock is engaged or not. A hole plug is available to provide a smooth face on non-locking style latches.
The latch's black ABS body, glass reinforced nylon lockplug, and stainless steel spring deliver corrosion-resistant performance in virtually any environment. This offers excellent utility for enclosures in network, telecom, computer, electronics, industrial equipment and transportation applications.
